People I Should Have Married – or maybe I did
By Judy Green
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Why I fell in love with him
- He was and still is famous
- He was reliable
- His music is life changing
Why we were not well suited
- He was German and wore a wig
- He “sired” over 20 children
- St. Thomas Church at Leipzig is always cold
Mon mari #1: Well, he was partly German and a Lutheran who went to church a lot.
Uhtred the Bold (d. 1014)
Why I fell in love with him
- He was brave and a warrior
- He was Danish or at least a Viking
- He consolidated and simplified things, mostly Northumbria
Why we were not well suited
- It’s possible that he didn’t exist
- He was obsessed with destroying things, including his relatives
- He couldn’t sing
Mon mari #2: Well, neither a Dane nor destructive, but he was probably from another (maybe better) era and certainly from a remote place – west Texas.
Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette 1873-1954)
Why I fell in love with her
- She was a “woman of letters”
- She was French and beautiful
- She didn’t give a damn
Why we were not well suited
- She married men I had my eye on
- She set a standard I can’t attain
Mon Mari #3: Well, he’s partly French –Takes beautiful pictures (of me!) — Doesn’t give a damn
