I

’m not sure why “terrain” is among my random thoughts. I think it’s about location. I’m always randomly wondering about my own position in the terrain — whether it’s geographic, intellectual, philosophical, aesthetic, etc. What is the “lay of the land?” What am I missing? For what am I equipped?

In this issue of Olive, I’m starting with intellectual terrain. Please read the article, “Theories and Models in Family Enterprise Advising,” co-authored with Patricia Annino, as we review the intellectual terrain of theories and models in the family enterprise field. This article is a chapter in Business Families and Family Businesses, a book published by Globe Law, and Business Ltd.

n the late 1980s, the introduction of the family enterprise as a field separate from entrepreneurship marked a change in the way multi-generational family enterprises were looked at, from both science and social science perspectives. Since then, a field of practice and/or professional discipline for advisers and consultants has evolved in parallel with increased understanding and research on the family enterprises themselves.

This new profession has identified, developed and espoused certain theories, models and terminologies to further articulate the skills and knowledge that professionals from related disciplines (e.g., law, finance and behavioural and management science) should be aware of and conversant in, before they step out of or add to their profession of origin and engage with multi-generational family enterprise clients.

Social Terrain: 10 Rules for Dinner Parties
I

mmanuel Kant had clear views on what makes a successful dinner party. Social eating, according to Kant, gives the intellect relaxation and room to recuperate while not letting it come to a standstill.

In fact, Kant thought that dining alone was a bad idea which encouraged “intellectual self-gnawing” and, in the extreme, even pathological conditions — literal or figurative hypochondria. Even insanity!

According to Kant, the benefits of social eating (dinner parties) are not automatic, but social eating allows one to find a healthy middle way between minimum and maximum amounts of thinking.
